Golden hour, fall colour, fresh snow: when to shoot in Ottawa

Ottawa gives you four very different cities across the year. Here is when to book for the look you have in your head.

Golden hour, every time

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset is soft, warm and forgiving. If you can shoot then, do. It flatters everyone.

Spring, for colour and renewal

May brings blossoms and the tulips at Dow's Lake. Fresh, bright and hopeful, perfect for engagements and family sessions.

Summer, for long golden evenings

Late sunsets mean relaxed evening shoots and lush green everywhere. Book the very end of the day.

Fall, the one everyone wants

Late September to mid October is peak. Warm light, red and gold leaves, and that crisp Ottawa air. Book early, these dates go fast.

Winter, for drama and calm

Fresh snow, the frozen canal and cosy layers make quiet, cinematic images. Shorter days, so we plan tightly around the light.

When in doubt, pick an overcast day

A soft grey sky is a giant softbox, even and gentle and kind to skin. Cloudy is not a cancellation, it is an opportunity.
