10 Best Ottawa Locations for Engagement & Couple Photos

After years shooting couples across the National Capital Region, these are the spots I come back to again and again. I've noted the best season and time of day for each, because in Ottawa, timing is everything.

1. Dominion Arboretum & Dow's Lake

A 26-hectare collection of trees and gardens beside Dow's Lake. Tree-lined paths, open meadows and water make it endlessly flexible. Best in: spring (magnolia blossoms) and fall (golden colour). Time: early morning or the hour before sunset for soft, warm light and fewer people.

2. Major's Hill Park

Steps from the ByWard Market, with sweeping views of Parliament and the Ottawa River, that classic "this is Ottawa" backdrop. During the Canadian Tulip Festival each May, it explodes with colour. Time: golden hour for that soft, romantic glow.

3. ByWard Market

For couples who want energy and edge: brick laneways, colourful murals and cafe corners. It's playful and editorial. Time: early morning or late evening to keep the crowds out of frame.

4. The Rideau Canal & Ottawa Locks

The flight of locks between the Chateau Laurier and Parliament is pure Ottawa romance. In winter, the canal becomes the world's largest skating rink, a unique, only-here engagement idea. Time: sunrise for stillness, or blue hour for mood.

5. National Gallery & Nepean Point

The Gallery's glass architecture and the giant Maman spider sculpture give a modern, artful feel, while neighbouring Nepean Point offers elevated river views. A great two-in-one stop. Time: midday works here thanks to open shade and architecture.

6. Hog's Back Falls

Rushing water and rugged rock for couples who want something wilder and more dramatic. Best in: late spring (high water) and fall. Tip: bring shoes you can move in.

7. Gatineau Park (Pink Lake & Champlain Lookout)

Just across the river in Quebec: forests, lookouts and lakes. In autumn it's arguably the most beautiful place in the region. Best in: late September to mid-October for peak fall colour. Time: golden hour at a lookout is unforgettable.

8. Parliament Hill & the Ottawa River pathways

Iconic Gothic architecture plus quiet riverside paths a short walk away. Grand and timeless. Time: early morning for empty frames and golden light on the stone.

9. Andrew Haydon Park

West-end calm: ponds, bridges and big open skies along the river, lovely for a relaxed, natural session and beautiful sunsets. Time: sunset, hands down.

10. A countryside escape, Almonte & Mississippi Mills

Thirty minutes from the city: waterfalls, heritage mill-town streets and farm fields. Perfect for couples who want texture, privacy and a touch of nostalgia. Best in: summer and fall.

My advice: pick one or two nearby locations rather than rushing five. Great couple photos come from feeling relaxed and present, not from changing backdrops every ten minutes.
